John M. Arneson, the son of Marvin and Ferne (Phifer) Arneson, was born August 19, 1938, at Smith Center, Kansas. He departed this life on March 10, 2024, at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska.
John graduated from the Red Cloud High School with the class of 1955. Following the completion of his formal education he was employed as a hired man for several different local farmers. In 1960, and for the ensuing ten years he became a partner in farming and the cattle business with his uncle, Garnet Phifer. John was united in marriage with Doris “Cork” Bartley on February 24, 1962 and this union was blessed with three children. They made their home in the Red Cloud community where John continued farming until 1971, when they moved into town and he worked at the grain elevator for a time and then purchased the Culligan dealership. He was later employed by the city of Red Cloud until moving to Abilene, Kansas in 1985, where he owned and ran a greyhound kennel. They not only raised and trained greyhounds for their own business but boarded and trained dogs for greyhound owners from various states. In 2002, John and Cork returned to Red Cloud. Discovering that retiring was a bit too boring, John started his part time (full time) employ-ment with Kenny Lumber in 2002, and remained with them for the next eighteen years. John greatly enjoyed returning to Red Cloud and renewing old friendships, as well as meeting and helping the customers at the lumber yard. He greeted everyone with a warm smile and engaging conversation.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Doris "Cork" Arneson; his parents, Marvin “Pete” and Ferne Arneson and his brother, Jerry Arneson.
Left to treasure his memory are his children, Greg Arneson, Cristy Shockley and Kiley Schumacher and husband Lee; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Jackson and Karen Elliott and husband, Bill; nieces, nephews, other relatives and his many friends.
Graveside services were Friday, 11:00 am, March 15, 2024, at the Red Cloud Cemetery with Rev. Dan Benedict officiating.
a reception followed the service for family and friends at the Red Cloud Golf Course Clubhouse.
